From gross pay to take-home.
Quick answer
Take-home pay = gross salary − income tax − Medicare levy (2%) − HELP repayment (if any) + low income tax offset (if eligible). Super guarantee of 12% is paid on top by your employer. For 2026–27 the first $18,200 is tax-free, the next band is taxed at 15%, then 30%, 37% and 45%.
Resident tax rates
| Taxable income | 2025–26 | 2026–27 | From 1 July 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 – $18,200 | Nil | Nil | Nil |
| $18,201 – $45,000 | 16% | 15% | 14% |
| $45,001 – $135,000 | 30% | 30% | 30% |
| $135,001 – $190,000 | 37% | 37% | 37% |
| Over $190,000 | 45% | 45% | 45% |
These are marginal rates: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside that band. Someone on $80,000 in 2026–27 pays nothing on the first $18,200, 15% on the next $26,800 and 30% on the remaining $35,000 — $14,520 before Medicare and offsets, an average rate of about 18%.
Medicare levy and surcharge
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income for most residents. It phases in for low incomes — in 2025–26 nothing is payable below $28,011 for a single person, then 10 cents per dollar until the full 2% applies from $35,013. The Medicare levy surcharge (1% to 1.5%) applies on top only if you earn above the threshold and do not hold appropriate private hospital cover: for 2026–27 the single threshold is $105,000 (family $210,000).
HECS / HELP repayments
Since 1 July 2025 compulsory repayments are calculated on a marginal basis. For 2026–27 nothing is repaid below $69,528; you repay 15% of income between $69,528 and $129,717, then 17% of income above that, until a 10% flat calculation takes over at $186,051. Employers withhold extra tax during the year when you tell them you have a loan; the actual repayment is worked out when your return is lodged. See the HELP repayment calculator.
Superannuation
Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% of ordinary time earnings into your fund, in addition to your salary, up to the maximum contribution base. From 1 July 2026, under Payday Super, it must arrive within seven business days of each payday. If your package was quoted "including super", divide by 1.12 to get the cash salary the tax is calculated on.
Why your payslip may differ
Your employer withholds tax using the ATO's PAYG withholding schedules, which spread the expected annual tax across your pay cycle and ignore deductions, other income and most offsets. This calculator spreads the actual annual tax evenly instead, so it is a reliable guide to your average take-home pay rather than an exact copy of a single payslip. The year's final position is settled when your tax return is lodged — which is when the refund (or the bill) appears.

Pay & tax — your questions.
How is take-home pay calculated in Australia?
Start with gross salary (excluding super). Subtract income tax at the resident rates for the year, add the 2% Medicare levy, subtract any low income tax offset, and subtract a compulsory HELP repayment if you have a student loan. What is left is your net or take-home pay. Super guarantee (12%) is paid by your employer on top and does not reduce take-home pay unless your package was quoted including super.
Is super included in my salary?
It depends on how the offer was written. '$80,000 plus super' means super guarantee is paid on top. '$80,000 package including super' means the super comes out of that figure, so your cash salary is about $71,429 (80,000 ÷ 1.12) at the 12% rate. Tick 'salary includes super' in the calculator for the second case.
Why is the tax taken from my pay different to this estimate?
Employers withhold PAYG tax using ATO withholding schedules that spread the year's expected tax over your pay cycle. They don't know about your deductions, other income or offsets, so the amount withheld rarely matches your final tax exactly — the difference becomes your refund or bill when your tax return is lodged. This calculator shows the annual tax spread evenly, which is a close guide but not the exact withholding figure.
What is the tax-free threshold?
Australian residents pay no income tax on the first $18,200 of taxable income each year. You can only claim the tax-free threshold from one employer at a time; a second job is taxed from the first dollar so that the year's total is right. If you don't claim it, more tax is withheld during the year and you usually get it back at tax time.
How does salary sacrifice affect my pay?
Salary sacrificed to super is taken from your gross pay before income tax and taxed at 15% inside the fund instead of your marginal rate, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount sacrificed. Sacrificed amounts count towards the concessional contributions cap along with employer super. Whether it suits you depends on your circumstances — we can talk through the tax side; a licensed financial adviser handles the investment side.
Does this calculator cover the 2026–27 tax cuts?
Yes. From 1 July 2026 the 16% rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 drops to 15%, and from 1 July 2027 to 14%. Select the financial year in the calculator to compare. The 2026–27 HELP thresholds, Medicare levy surcharge tiers and super caps are also built in.
Can I use this for a casual or part-time job?
Yes. Choose 'hourly' and enter your rate and usual hours per week, or enter your actual weekly or fortnightly pay. Casual loading is already in your hourly rate. The tax estimate assumes your pay is steady across the year; irregular hours will land somewhere near this on average.
