01 — What you can check

Know who you're dealing with.

A quick check before you invoice, pay a supplier or sign a contract can save a great deal of trouble later.

ABN status

Whether an ABN is currently active or has been cancelled, and the date that status took effect.

GST registration

Whether the business is registered for GST — worth confirming before you pay a tax invoice that charges it.

Entity name & type

The legal entity behind the ABN — sole trader, company, trust or partnership — with its state and postcode.

Results are drawn from the Australian Business Register (ABR). This tool is provided for general information; for the authoritative record use the ABR's own ABN Lookup at abr.business.gov.au. SMT Accounting is not affiliated with the ABR or the Australian Government. The ABN or name you enter is passed to the ABR to retrieve the result — see our privacy policy.

Need to register, update or fix an ABN?

Starting out, adding GST, changing your details or reinstating a cancelled ABN — we can take care of it as a registered tax agent, and set you up for what comes next.

02 — FAQ

ABNs & GST — your questions.

How do I check an ABN?

Enter the 11-digit ABN — or a business name — in the search box above. The result shows the entity name, whether the ABN is active, the entity type and whether the business is registered for GST, using data from the Australian Business Register.

How can I tell if a business is registered for GST?

Look up its ABN. The result shows the GST registration status and, where available, the date it took effect. A supplier generally needs to be registered for GST before it can charge GST on a tax invoice.

What's the difference between an ABN and an ACN?

An ACN (Australian Company Number) is a nine-digit number that ASIC issues to a company. An ABN (Australian Business Number) is an 11-digit number used for tax and business dealings. A company's ABN is usually its ACN with two extra digits in front. Sole traders, trusts and partnerships have an ABN but no ACN.

Do I need an ABN?

If you are carrying on a business or other enterprise in Australia you are entitled to an ABN and will usually need one in practice — it is required for GST registration, and other businesses may have to withhold tax from payments to you if you don't quote one. Employees are not entitled to an ABN. If you're unsure, we can confirm your position and register you correctly.

Is this an official government search?

No. This is a free tool provided by SMT Accounting that displays data from the Australian Business Register (ABR). For the authoritative record, use the ABR's own ABN Lookup at abr.business.gov.au.

Something on the register is wrong — can you fix it?

Yes. If your ABN details are out of date, your GST registration needs to change, or an ABN was cancelled and needs to be reinstated, book a call and we'll help you correct it.
