If your business is a company, trust, partnership or SMSF, the ATO now requires you to nominate your registered tax agent yourself before we can act for you. It's a quick, one-time security step you complete in ATO Online services for business — here's exactly how.
Before you start
You'll need:
- myID (formerly myGovID) set up on your phone, and
- to be an authorised person for the business — usually a director — with access set up in Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).
New to myID or Online services for business? Give us a call and we'll walk you through the set-up.
The steps
-
Sign in to ATO Online services for business
Sign in with your myID. You'll need to be an authorised person for the business (usually a director) with access set up in RAM.
-
Go to Profile → Agent nominations
From the menu, open Profile, then Agent nominations, and select Add.
-
Enter our Registered Agent Number
Enter 26266813 (or search “SMT Accounting”), confirm the details shown are ours, and submit the nomination.
-
Tell us it's done
Let us know once you've submitted. We then have 28 days to accept the nomination and link your account — after that we take it from there.
Official ATO guidance
You can read the ATO's own instructions here: Client-to-agent linking steps (ato.gov.au). Verify our registration any time on the TPB public register.
Frequently asked
Who needs to nominate a tax agent through client-to-agent linking?
All entities with an ABN except sole traders — companies, trusts, partnerships and SMSFs — must nominate their registered tax agent in ATO Online services for business before the agent can act. Individuals and sole traders don't need this step.
What is SMT Accounting's Registered Agent Number?
Our Registered Tax Agent Number is 26266813. Enter this when nominating us, or search “SMT Accounting”.
How long does the nomination last?
Once submitted, we have 28 days to accept and link your account. If it isn't actioned within 28 days the nomination expires and must be submitted again.
Do individuals and sole traders need to do this?
No. We can be authorised to act for individuals and sole traders without client-to-agent linking — just complete our online onboarding.
