01 — How it works

GST in plain English.

Quick answer

Australia's goods and services tax is a flat 10%. To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive total, divide it by 11 to get the GST, or by 1.1 to get the price excluding GST. The rate is the same in every state and territory.

The two formulas

Price excluding GSTGST amountprice × 0.1
Price excluding GSTPrice including GSTprice × 1.1
Price including GSTGST amounttotal ÷ 11
Price including GSTPrice excluding GSTtotal ÷ 1.1

The "divide by 11" rule trips people up. GST is 10% of the original price, and the total is 110% of it, so the GST is one-eleventh of the total — not one-tenth. On a $1,100 invoice the GST is $100, not $110.

Showing GST on a tax invoice

If you are registered for GST, a tax invoice for a sale over $82.50 (including GST) must show your identity and ABN, the date, a description of what was sold, the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the extent to which each item is taxable. For sales of $1,000 or more it must also show the buyer's identity or ABN. Prices shown to consumers must be GST-inclusive under Australian Consumer Law.

Rounding

The ATO allows GST to be rounded to the nearest cent on each line or on the invoice total, as long as you are consistent. This calculator rounds the GST component to the nearest cent. When you multiply by a quantity, the GST is calculated on the line total so the invoice adds up.

Who needs to add GST?

Only GST-registered businesses charge GST. Registration is compulsory once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 in a 12-month period ($150,000 for not-for-profits), and from the first dollar if you drive a taxi, limousine or rideshare vehicle. Below the threshold registration is optional — it lets you claim GST credits on your costs, at the price of charging GST and lodging a BAS. Our GST registration guide covers the timing, and our BAS service handles the lodgments.

GST-free and input-taxed sales

Not everything attracts GST. Most basic food, many health and medical services, education, childcare and exports are GST-free: no GST is charged, but the seller can still claim credits on related costs. Residential rent, the sale of existing residential premises and most financial supplies are input-taxed: no GST is charged and no credits can be claimed. Getting the classification right matters more than the arithmetic — it is where most BAS errors start.

02 — FAQ

GST — your questions.

How do I calculate GST on a price?

GST in Australia is 10%. To add GST to a GST-exclusive price, multiply it by 1.1 (or add 10%). A $500 job plus GST is $550. To find the GST inside a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 11: $550 ÷ 11 = $50 GST, leaving $500 excluding GST.

Why divide by 11 and not take 10% off?

Because GST was added on top of the base price, it is 10% of the base, not 10% of the total. The total is 110% of the base, so the GST is 1/11 of the total. Taking 10% off a GST-inclusive price overstates the GST — on $550 it would give $55 instead of the correct $50.

Which sales are GST-free in Australia?

Most basic food, many health and medical services, education courses, childcare, exports and some other supplies are GST-free, so no GST is added and no GST is included in the price. Residential rent and most financial supplies are input-taxed: no GST is charged, but GST credits on related costs cannot be claimed either. If you are unsure how a sale should be treated, ask us before you invoice.

Do I have to charge GST?

Only if you are registered for GST. Registration is compulsory once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for not-for-profits), and from the first dollar for taxi, limousine and rideshare drivers. Below the threshold you can choose to register. See our guide to the GST registration threshold.

Can I claim back the GST I pay on business expenses?

If you are registered for GST you can generally claim a GST credit for the GST included in purchases for your business, provided you hold a valid tax invoice for purchases over $82.50 including GST. The credits are claimed on your BAS and reduce the net GST you pay. GST on private use, input-taxed supplies and some other items cannot be claimed.

Is this calculator accurate for my BAS?

The arithmetic is exact, but your BAS totals depend on how each sale and purchase is classified, your accounting method (cash or accruals), and adjustments. Use the calculator to check individual amounts; use proper bookkeeping — or a registered BAS agent — for the return itself.
