01 — How it's calculated

Income tax, step by step.

Quick answer

Tax payable = tax on taxable income at the marginal rates − low income tax offset + Medicare levy (2%) + Medicare levy surcharge (if applicable) + compulsory HELP repayment. Your refund is the tax withheld during the year minus that figure. For 2026–27 residents pay nothing on the first $18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37% and 45%.

The 2026–27 cut is worth up to $268 a year to everyone earning over $45,000; a second cut of the same size follows from 1 July 2027 when the band drops to 14%.

Offsets this calculator includes — and doesn't

The low income tax offset is applied automatically. Not included: the seniors and pensioners tax offset, the private health insurance rebate, franking credits, the zone offset, spouse super contribution offset and the small business income tax offset (see the sole trader calculator for that one). Reportable fringe benefits and reportable super contributions are also ignored, although they count toward HELP repayment income and the surcharge thresholds.

Estimating your refund

Your employer withholds PAYG tax each pay using ATO schedules. At year end the ATO compares the total withheld (on your income statement) with the tax actually payable on your return. The gap is your refund or your bill. Deductions are where the refund is usually made or lost — our deductions guide and tax return checklist cover what to look for, and from 2026–27 a $1,000 standard deduction can be claimed instead of itemised work expenses.

Family thresholds for the Medicare levy reduction use the ATO's published figures; the surcharge uses taxable income as a proxy for income for surcharge purposes.

02 — FAQ

Income tax — your questions.

How much tax do I pay on $100,000 in Australia?

For 2026–27 an Australian resident with $100,000 of taxable income pays $20,520 in income tax plus $2,000 Medicare levy — $22,520 in total, an average rate of about 22.5%, leaving $77,480. For 2025–26 the figures are $20,788 tax plus $2,000 Medicare. Add a HELP repayment if you have a student loan, and the Medicare levy surcharge if you earn above $105,000 (2026–27) without private hospital cover.

How do I estimate my tax refund?

Compare the tax withheld from your pay during the year (shown on your income statement in myGov, or your payslips) with the tax actually payable on your taxable income. If more was withheld than is payable you get a refund; if less, you have an amount to pay. Enter the tax withheld in the calculator and it shows the estimate. Deductions reduce taxable income and increase the refund.

What is the low income tax offset?

The LITO is a non-refundable offset of up to $700 for residents with taxable income up to $37,500. It reduces by 5 cents per dollar between $37,501 and $45,000, then by 1.5 cents per dollar until it runs out at $66,667. It is applied automatically when your return is assessed — you don't need to claim it.

Who pays the Medicare levy surcharge?

Residents whose income for surcharge purposes is above the threshold and who do not hold an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover for the whole year. For 2026–27 the single thresholds are $105,000 (1%), $123,000 (1.25%) and $164,000 (1.5%); family thresholds are double, plus $1,500 for each dependent child after the first.

Do foreign residents pay the Medicare levy?

No. Foreign residents for tax purposes pay income tax from the first dollar at 30% up to $135,000, then 37% and 45%, but no Medicare levy and no low income tax offset. Working holiday makers pay 15% on the first $45,000 and then the ordinary rates. Residency for tax is not the same as citizenship or visa status — if you're unsure, ask us.

What's changing on 1 July 2027?

The rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 falls again, from 15% to 14%, worth up to $268 a year. The $18,200 tax-free threshold and the 30%, 37% and 45% bands are unchanged. The calculator will be updated when the ATO publishes the full 2027–28 tables.
