Accountant & tax agent for Wangaratta

Registered tax agent no. 26266813 · Shepparton North, by appointment · Updated October 2026

Wangaratta is the largest centre in north-east Victoria between Shepparton and the border: a regional hospital, a manufacturing base that goes back to the post-war textile mills, the King Valley and Milawa wine country on its doorstep, and a Rural City that takes in nearly thirty thousand people. SMT Accounting acts as registered tax agent for Wangaratta clients without asking them to leave town.

Working with us from Wangaratta

Our office at 53 Mootwingee Crescent, Shepparton North is about an hour and a quarter from Wangaratta by the Midland Highway. We see clients there by appointment, but we designed the practice for people who would rather not spend half a day on the road. A new Wangaratta client usually starts with a free call to talk through what they need, then sends documents over WhatsApp or secure upload, and from there every step, including review, questions and signing, happens on the phone or on a video call. For a company or trust the first step is the ATO agent nomination, which we explain screen by screen. You work directly with Sohail Yasin (CPA, registered tax agent) and Syed Shah (IPA member, registered tax agent); there is no junior in between.

Wangaratta's economy and who we work with

Wangaratta sits where the Ovens and King rivers meet, and its economy has several distinct layers. Northeast Health Wangaratta is a full regional hospital with emergency, maternity, aged care, dental, imaging and cancer services, which makes health the town's defining employer and brings a large workforce of nurses, allied health staff and support workers with their own deduction patterns. Industry has been part of Wangaratta since the Bruck textile mills opened in 1946 and employed more than a thousand people; textile and other manufacturing continues today on a smaller scale. To the south, the King Valley has built a reputation as the Australian home of Italian grape varieties, and with Milawa supports cellar doors, restaurants and accommodation that trade on visitor numbers. Add the Hume Freeway bypass, the Great Alpine Road and the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail, and transport, trades and tourism round out the picture. The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues each spring fills the town for a weekend.

The work that comes to us from Wangaratta reflects that:

  • Hospital and health workers with shift allowances, overtime, registration fees, uniforms and self-education, often across more than one employer.
  • Manufacturing employees and supervisors claiming protective gear, laundry and union fees, and sometimes a redundancy or termination payment to handle correctly.
  • Vineyards, cellar doors and hospitality venues with GST, wine equalisation tax, seasonal payroll and the primary production rules for the grape-growing side.
  • Tradies and transport operators on the Hume and Great Alpine corridors, running utes, trucks and subcontractors through a sole-trader or company structure.
  • Beef, cropping and mixed farms in the valleys, with averaging, Farm Management Deposits and fuel tax credits.
  • Households with investments: rental properties, shares and superannuation questions ahead of retirement.

Frequently asked

Why would a Wangaratta business use an accountant based in Shepparton North?

Because the location of the accountant matters far less than it used to. Lodgment, signing, bank feeds and document sharing are all electronic, and you deal directly with the two accountants who prepare your work. The office is about an hour and a quarter away by the Midland Highway if you ever want to meet in person.

I'm a nurse at the hospital with shift allowances and a second casual job. Is my return complicated?

Not for us. Allowances shown on your income statement are income; the related expenses, such as protective footwear, laundry, registration fees and self-education that relates to your current role, are claimed against them with records. With two employers we also check that tax-free threshold claims and any study loan repayments line up.

We run a cellar door and a few accommodation rooms in the King Valley. What do you handle?

The GST on wine sales, accommodation and events, wine equalisation tax where it applies, the primary production side of the vineyard, payroll for casual and seasonal staff, and the annual return for the entity that runs it all. We will say plainly when a question needs a specialist, such as WET rebate eligibility.

Can you take over part-way through the year if my previous accountant has already lodged a BAS?

Yes. Once you nominate us with the ATO we can see what has been lodged and what is outstanding, pick up the bookkeeping file where it was left, and continue from the next activity statement without redoing earlier periods.

Hospital, mill, vineyard or ute: we speak the language.
