Kialla, Kialla West and Kialla Lakes are where Shepparton has been growing: new estates on the city's southern edge, young families, people who commute into the city's hospitals, schools and shops, and the tradies building the next street. SMT Accounting is a registered tax agent on the other side of town, a short drive up the highway, and most of what we do for Kialla clients happens on a phone.
A few minutes up the highway
Our office at 53 Mootwingee Crescent, Shepparton North is about 13 minutes' drive from Kialla Lakes along the Goulburn Valley Highway, which makes an in-person appointment realistic for anyone who prefers to sit down with their accountant. Plenty of Kialla clients do exactly that once, for the first meeting, and then switch to WhatsApp for everything after. Documents arrive as photos, questions are answered by message or a quick call, and returns are signed on your phone. Sohail Yasin (CPA, registered tax agent) and Syed Shah (IPA member, registered tax agent) prepare the work personally.
Who lives and works in Kialla
Kialla sits within the City of Greater Shepparton, and the council's own strategic planning program includes the Kialla West and Kialla North growth corridors, which tells you where the next decade of housing is heading. At the 2021 Census the Kialla suburb counted 8,667 residents and about 2,390 families, with separate houses making up more than 95% of dwellings and hospitals, primary and secondary education and takeaway food among the largest employers of residents. In other words: a suburb of households rather than head offices, where the typical tax question is personal, not corporate, until someone starts a business in the shed.
The Kialla clients we work with most often are:
- Working families with two incomes, a mortgage, childcare and the usual mix of car, uniform, phone and home-office claims across both returns.
- Health, education and retail employees at Goulburn Valley Health, local schools and the shopping centres, including nurses and teachers with self-education and registration costs.
- Building and construction subcontractors working on the estates, with a ute, tools, materials and the question of when GST registration kicks in.
- Home-based and side businesses: online sellers, consultants, rideshare and delivery drivers, personal trainers and anyone else with an ABN and a second income stream.
- Investors with a rental property, shares or crypto who need the income and capital gains reported correctly.
- Established small businesses along the Goulburn Valley Highway, trading through companies and trusts with staff.
Services Kialla clients use
- Individual tax returns for employees, couples and investors, with every claim checked against the ATO's current rules.
- Sole trader tax returns for subcontractors, drivers and side businesses.
- Business and company tax, including whether a growing business should move from sole trader to a company or trust.
- BAS, GST and IAS lodged each quarter from your bank feed.
- Bookkeeping and payroll with Single Touch Payroll, set up for Payday Super from 1 July 2026.
- Rental property schedules for investors, with depreciation and interest apportioned correctly.
Before your first appointment
Have your tax file number and photo ID ready, because registered tax agents must verify every client's identity. Employees need receipts, a kilometre record or logbook, and a record of any hours worked from home; investors need rental statements, dividend statements and crypto exports; business owners need bank access or statements, invoices, payroll details and last year's return. Our tax return checklist sets it all out by category, and we will confirm exactly what applies to you on the first call.
Frequently asked
How far is your office from Kialla Lakes?
About 13 minutes by car. Our office at 53 Mootwingee Crescent, Shepparton North is roughly 9 kilometres up the Goulburn Valley Highway from Kialla Lakes Drive, and we see clients there by appointment. If you would rather not drive, everything can be handled by phone, WhatsApp, email and video.
We're a two-income household with a mortgage and kids. Is there much to a tax return?
Usually more than people expect: work-related car and home-office claims, the private health insurance rebate, spouse details that affect Medicare levy surcharge, and from 2026–27 the choice between the $1,000 standard deduction and claiming actual expenses. We prepare both returns together so nothing is missed between them.
I'm a subcontractor on new estates in Kialla. What do you need from me?
Your invoices or platform statements, bank statements or a bank feed, receipts for tools and materials, a logbook or kilometre record for the ute, and any payment summaries from builders who withheld tax. We will tell you whether GST registration applies and set up a quarterly BAS if it does.
Can you look after a small business and the owners' personal returns together?
Yes, and we recommend it. Preparing the business accounts, the company or trust return and the owners' individual returns in one process means wages, dividends, trust distributions and Division 7A loans are all consistent across the set.
