SMT Accounting is a registered tax agent that handles Numurkah's tax, BAS and bookkeeping by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Twenty-four minutes down the highway

Google Maps puts the drive from Numurkah to 53 Mootwingee Crescent, Shepparton North at about 24 minutes, straight down the Goulburn Valley Highway. We see Numurkah clients there by appointment, often for a first meeting about a new business or a farm restructure. After that, nearly everything runs through your phone: photograph the documents, answer our questions by message, approve the draft, sign electronically. Sohail Yasin (CPA, registered tax agent) and Syed Shah (IPA member, registered tax agent) prepare the work personally and are the people who answer when you call.

Numurkah's economy and the people we work with

Numurkah had 3,807 residents at the 2021 Census and is one of the four main towns of Moira Shire, whose council sits in Cobram. The town was surveyed in 1875 once the pastoral runs were opened to selection, and a soldier settlement scheme after the First World War put hundreds of ex-servicemen onto farm blocks around it. Moira Shire's own formation in 1994 turned on the fact that its irrigated farmers in the west and dryland farmers in the east have different needs, and Numurkah sits on the irrigated side, which is why dairy, pasture and cropping dominate the paddocks around town. The 2012 Broken Creek flood, which inundated much of the town and led to the hospital being rebuilt, is still a reference point for local business owners' insurance, record-keeping and continuity planning.

The Numurkah clients we most often act for are:

  • Dairy and mixed farmers with milk and livestock income, Farm Management Deposits, income averaging and water that is bought, sold and leased separately from the land.
  • Grain and fodder growers whose income lands in lumps at harvest, with machinery depreciation, fuel tax credits and the timing of sales across 30 June to manage.
  • Agricultural contractors: spraying, harvesting, fencing, earthmoving and hay carting, usually with a ute, a few machines and a BAS every quarter.
  • Hospital, aged-care and school staff at Numurkah's rebuilt health service and local schools, with shift allowances, registration fees and self-education claims.
  • Tradies and transport operators servicing farms and the housing on the town's edges.
  • Melville Street retailers, cafés and service businesses managing GST, staff and the question of when a sole trader should become a company or trust.

Frequently asked

Do you come to Numurkah, or do I come to you?

Neither is required. Our office at 53 Mootwingee Crescent, Shepparton North is about 24 minutes from Numurkah down the Goulburn Valley Highway, and you are welcome to book a time there. Most Numurkah clients send documents over WhatsApp or the secure upload link, talk to us by phone or video, and sign on their phone.

We have a dryland cropping block and some irrigated pasture. Can one return cover both?

Yes. Both are primary production income in the same entity, and we report them together with the harvest or livestock figures, water costs and the deductions that apply to each, such as water facilities, fencing and fodder storage. If the blocks are held in different names or entities, each one needs its own return and we prepare them as a set.

I'm a spray contractor with one employee. What are my obligations?

An ABN, GST registration once turnover reaches $75,000, quarterly BAS, PAYG withholding reported through Single Touch Payroll for your employee, super paid under the Payday Super rules from 1 July 2026, and an income tax return each year. Fuel tax credits may be claimable for fuel used in eligible off-road equipment. We set all of this up and quote a fixed fee for running it.

My previous accountant retired. How do I move to SMT without losing records?

Nominate SMT Accounting in ATO online services (our guide shows the screens) and we can access your lodgment history, income statements and activity statement records directly from the ATO. Any financial statements, depreciation schedules or software files you have are useful but not essential to get started.
